Tonight was the much-anticipated (by me) and much-ridiculed (by my friends and family) Hanson concert. Oh my goodness, what an excellent show: opened with Radiohead ("Optimistic"), threw in a little "Gimme Some Lovin'" and "Ain't No Sunshine," but didn't forget what originally brought in the hundreds of teenyboppers ("Where's The Love" and "Mmm-bop"). All of this, plus selections from the latest album. Whee!

We snagged a reasonably good spot on the edge of the pit, considering neither Jackie nor I had been inclined to join the ranks camping out on High Street outside the venue since Thursday. (These same crazy fans are the reason it would have been impossible to actually meet the band, which is tragic. My plan, due to lack of anything like a CD jacket for autographs, was to have them sign my mom's birthday card. Quirky? Funny? Obnoxiously so, but she'd get a huge kick out of it--alas, it was not to be.)

We entertained ourselves during the long periods of waiting by checking out the crowd, which provided plenty of fodder for our snarktastic wit. So many homemade puff-painted, be-dazzled T-shirts! So many interesting "trendy" fashion choices! (My personal favorite: white legwarmers with flip-flops.) So many couples who had to be physically connected at all times. *sigh*

Back to the performance. My favorite Hanson has always been Isaac (he just seemed to have the most sense about the whole thing, even back in the crazy Middle of Nowhere days), and I wasn't disappointed. Boy can not only play a guitar quite nicely, he can rock a faux-hawk and the blazer-with-jeans look. Taylor is still far too pretty for his own good (which always bugged me about him--I suspect I'm not alone in this). His hair is totally prettier than mine. He's even pretty when he's all sweaty. Zac, whom I generally always ignored, is legal (woo!), kinda pudgy, and sporting a shaggy moptop which might one day achieve full mullet-hood.

It's a shame that it was nearly impossible to actually hear most of the vocals, 'cause what I did hear was quite nice. If it weren't for the crowd, actually, it would have been a fabulous show. As it is, I'll have to wait about five years to see them again. Once the core audience has passed the acceptable age for squealing/screaming "I love you Zac Hanson!" for the length of a concert, it'll be quite the excellent musical experience.
