Another favorite book from childhood, I was thrilled last winter when I finally re-discovered my copy of Norse Gods and Giants by Ingri & Edgar Parin D'Aulaire. This book is full of really gorgeous colored pencil illustrations, some full-color but many with just two colors. I didn't get every single god, goddess, or giant in this round -- that'll be a rainy day project for the future -- but I did pull several of my favorite bits.

In fact, I'm going to be really obnoxious and post commentary for some of them (which I'll put under a separate cut - I'm totally having too much fun over here).

All icons are free & up for grabs, although most of these are a bit more...random, shall we say, than the last batch. :)

Sometimes I pick up books from my childhood and start reading them again. Then I remember that I have a scanner, and I spend a good two four hours violating all sorts of copyright laws. I think I crossed the line of fair use with Barbara Cooney's picture book Miss Rumphius -- but I couldn't help it. Every page has some wonderful bit, even if it's just a tiny detail. Related: you may notice that I'm kind of in love with the little house by the sea. I apologize for my enthusiasm on that one, but there frankly wasn't much else to do last night.

Additionally, this one's for the Pioneer Valley kids -- Miss Rumphius totally works at Smith's Neilson Library: + )

I was in an iconning mood tonight, inspired by [livejournal.com profile] thepinkscarlett's recent post which included the Enchanted Forest Chronicles icons I'd been craving. *points to new icon*

If you haven't yet seen Foster's Home for Imaginary Friends, go. It rocks my socks. Ergo, I made icons, using graphics from the production blog.

I figure, who doesn't need a sing-along right now?

Doe, a deer, a female deer...

Plus I get to use my icon, joy!

I'm on a bit of a dancing kick at the moment. No explanation for that, sorry.

This weekend, I realized that I really need to get my shit together. Not just in a "gee, haven't written for my thesis in a month" sense -- it's more of a truly serious "what will I do after May 28th?" thing. What brought it on? The alum networking event on Saturday night had a lot to do with it, but it's mostly just the fact that the semester is finally starting and the idea of finishing is slowly sinking in. What the hell do I do next? Forget next; I have to figure out how I'm getting through the next four months: will the thesis continue? How will I put out another English newsletter without dying? What classes am I taking -- is it worth it to take the journalism course, or should I stick with Documentary Film, which I know I'll enjoy but is potentially less useful?

Hopefully part of the issue will be resolved today, when I go to Writing About the Arts. If I fall asleep, it's out. Good plan, yes?

Also, everyone in the house kissed someone over break. Except me. And damn am I envious. I can't even blame the usual &#@* women's college sitaution because clearly...So of course this is what I need to be brooding about, instead of my future. asadfkjklargh.

Mm...yes. So the first major section of my thesis is due on Friday, by my self-scheduled deadline of noon (so that I may go on with my day afterwards). I'm working all day tomorrow, and while I successfully wrote two and a half long paragraphs on Tuesday at work...I can't count on that time. I have a lot to say, it doesn't have to be good, I just have to get it on the page...so I can do it. I think.

In the meantime, I spent my dinner break this evening watching Help. Yes, that Help, with the hilarious, totally stoned Beatles running around amidst some awesomely cutting-edge filmmaking. Richard Lester is my hero, and I'm now very excited that I received How I Won The War for Christmas unexpectedly.

A Hard Day's Night is widely recognized as being among the first music videos, and pioneering MTV-style editing, etc. After tonight, I'd have to say that music videos owe even more to Help -- the performance scenes are still frequently just the lads and their instruments, but the editing is incredible and some of the cinematography -- especially on "You're Gonna Lose That Girl," which has subsequently been iconned -- is just so pretty.

Plus Help is easily one of the silliest movies ever made. I...really want to watch it again. But I contented myself with making (simple!) icons instead.

Right! Now I'm off to remember how much I love to talk about Tom Stoppard. Right? Right! He's English, too!* It all connects!

*Okay, technically he's Czech. But! He's British enough to be made a knight. So that's that.

I'M UPDATING FROM THE AIRPORT, HI!

*ahem* Sorry. I'm a person who's a wee bit less advanced, technologically, than she likes to acknowledge. Wireless internet is still incredibly exciting for me.

All packed and ready to go by midnight last night; 60 pounds of luggage, my backpack, the laptop and I are all headed back to South Hadley today. I can't believe it's that time already, etc. Mom's braving the gas prices and Labor Day traffic to come out this weekend with the rest of my stuff (some linens, and a bunch of gadgetry/supplies for the kitchen) -- she's still feeling guilty about not driving me back, and I'm still sad that I don't get to drive back with her. But we'll survive.

In other news, I spent much of the time I should have been packing making icons. *flexes procrastination muscles* Yep, still got it. I'll share, although none are particularly groundbreaking.

Ohhh, let's see...it's Tuesday night, which means it's time for The Amazing Race. (CBS, 10 PM EST--and yes, I do plan to harp on this show until I manage to convert somebody.)

Trimmed about 4 inches off my hair today (so it's shoulder-length), and am going through the usual "Where'd all my hair go, and why is what's left in my face?" freak-out. I like it, though. It's cute, and I was due for a trim. It's also much poofier than normal because it was blow-dried, which also freaks me out. But I'll deal.

The other day, I was puttering through friends' friends-lists (sue me, I was bored) and fooled around with the Portrait Illustration Maker. I made 2 StageManager!Gigs (or ASM!Gigs, if you prefer) icons--I'm rather more proud of them than I should be. Edited 7/14 to include my partner in crime.

One for the good times )

Having grown bored with my current set of icons (and 'cause I was using that Brel icon so frequently), I decided it was time for a change. While I'm still considering getting someone over at [livejournal.com profile] fan_the_vote to make something snazzy, it's way more fun finding images and playing around with PaintShop Pro myself. Whee!

(credit for the "heroine addict" concept goes to the excellent [livejournal.com profile] cleolinda--non-Star Wars ones will surface here eventually)
