Apparently, knitting was the hobby that I most desperately wanted but never knew it until now. I've spent far too much of my time the past few days knitting up a storm, watching movies, and going to bed far too late at night.

In fact, I've knitted all the way through
  • My Best Friend's Wedding (as previously mentioned)
  • The Devil Wears Prada (better than expected)
  • Desk Set (classic Hepburn/Tracy: she's a librarian, he's the computer engineer who's making her job obsolete)
  • "Studio 360," featuring interviews w/ Tom Stoppard, Isabelle Allende & Darren Aronofsky
  • "This American Life," about reruns in everyday life
  • Bleak House - all 15 hour-long episodes of the Gillian Anderson-starring BBC series (highly recommended)

  • Other projects:
  • dropped computer off for repairs
  • gradually writing and sending New Year's cards
  • tentatively planning for Columbus visits, including New Year's Eve activities
  • baking
  • sleeping
  • reading Jonathan Strange & Mr. Norrell (Christmas present!) and [livejournal.com profile] yuletide stories
  • first haircut since August, which required a 40-minute wait (sigh)

  • I'm ready to spend time with people who aren't family, thanks.

Just what I needed this week: my iBook is on the fritz, and I'm afraid it's already crashed entirely. Documents were recently backed up; music and photos were not. Frell.
Dear Santa: Please save my computer, or least help me find an inexpensive way to do so. For my peace of mind in daily life, I need my computer to be operational almost as badly as I need to find a job. (The two are not unconnected, obviously.) I've been pretty good this year, I think, and far too much of my life is packed into that little Mac for it to be gone.
Thank you for your time and consideration -- apologies for the lateness of this request.
    Love, Emily
What else? That's pretty much the news. The drive out here wasn't too, too bad, and because we were running late, I got to spend the night at my grandparents' house in Cincinnati. Grandma taught me how to knit, and it's totally my new favorite hobby -- which nicely enhances my old-lady lifestyle. Last night I started knitting at the end of Ocean's 11, and went all the way through My Best Friend's Wedding. Tonight, I'm waiting for Swing Time to come on Turner Classic Movies, and for the Yuletide archive to go live.

    Happy holidays, all!

    The "Twelve Days" meme!

On the twelfth day of Christmas, e_clare sent to me...
    Twelve vikings drumming
    Eleven buckeyes piping
    Ten documentaries a-leaping
    Nine bookstores dancing
    Eight musicals a-man-walling
    Seven pre-raphaelites a-reading
    Six fjords editing
    Five se-e-e-ending letters
    Four star wars
    Three ben folds
    Two fairy tales
...and a travel in an ugly betty.

10:40 a.m.: *gets back into bed because omg it is too early*

This is my first domestic birthday/St. Patrick's Day in two years, and it's shaping up to be rather fantastic.

Yesterday, after much waffling back and forth about what constitutes "too much Irishness for the Italian/Lithuanian to handle," I agreed to take up [livejournal.com profile] mirror_dancer's invitation to come to Springfield. So the four of us -- Kristy, banannagoats, the Boy Wonder, and I -- hopped into the van and got lost on the way. We eventually made it, and spent the evening crammed into a basement bar with a hundred-some drunken Irish folk, which was great fun. Collectively, we lasted until midnight, when Maura got the band to sing Happy Birthday to me. And then we came home and crashed.

Plans for today aren't set, but they mostly involve sleeping, baking, and maybe hitting a bar in Northampton tonight. Spring break is the best.

In other news, [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes and I are geniuses. That's all you need to know.
    e_clare: (that's my thesis!)
Smarties makes conversation hearts now. (I know! WTF?) Sadly, it seems the company is still mastering the art of choosing "conversation" phrases. For example, what do you do with a heart that says "HAPPY FACE"? I get that we're in the age of technology and text messaging here, but when you're passing candy hearts back and forth? You can't just smile at the person as you pass them one?

The Smarties are also oddly depressing. Yesterday, I got one that said "LONELY". No punctuation, just a simple statement. Just now, I have a "CHEER UP". Maybe it goes with the Lonely one? In fairness, that's only two that are depressing. But..."ANGEL FACE"? You're kidding, right? "PRETTY EYES", I'll let slide, compared with the others; "Hot", "Be My Girl", "Sweet Heart", okay. "BE MY LOVE" is a little too Marlowe for my tastes -- my English major is showing again, I know -- but it almost works.

"I'M HOOKED"? The appropriate response to "Angel Face," I guess.

I'm horribly tempted to do a seventh grade-style short story. Somebody give me a prompt, and I'll write a story from a roll of Smarties hearts...if we're out, then I'll use all ten from this entry.

Guess what I'm supposed to be doing right now? *points to icon* Internet, I wish I could quit you!

I succeeded in my goal of having fun with Valentines Day this year by spending the entire evening yesterday making valentines and watching the Olympics. We finally found a use for all the old man-wall photos and various odd pictures I've been hoarding for four years: turn them into valentines! I made cheesy movie valentines for a bunch of people, and came up with far more clever one-liners for banannagoats' efforts than my own.

My personal favorite was the Eddie Izzard one: "Cake, death, or me? / Ciaaoo, Valentine!" I'm also pretty proud of the Gone With The Wind effort ("Give a damn, my dear -- be my Valentine!").

Ultimately, 'Goats wins at life for my valentine: essentially a pocket-sized man-wall, she took all my favorite tiny photos and put them into a flipbook. It's kind of amazing, and I'll love it forever -- it's four years'-worth of in-jokes, attractive men, friendship and love, all rolled into one 3x5 package. ♥ ♥ ♥

So now I spent the afternoon running around, handing out cards and generally spreading the love. On tonight's agenda: an extended film screening/make-up class for Documentaries; the men's skating short program; and probably more lounging around and eating chocolate. Hopefully there will also be wine. This could be a very good day indeed.

"I don't know how to write love. I try to write it properly, and it just comes out embarassing...Perhaps I should write it completely artificial. Blank verse. Poetic imagery. Not so much of the 'Will you still love me when my tits are droopy?' 'Of course I will darling, it's your bum I'm mad for', and more of the 'By my troth, thy beauty makest the moon hide her radiance.' Loving and being loved is unliterary. It's happiness expressed in banality and lust." - Stoppard, The Real Thing.

Happy New Year, all! Lets cross our fingers and hope for the best.

    (Hi. I'm an optimist.)

What I mean is, best wishes for a fantastic 2006 and all that. A lot of us will graduate and find jobs and write theses and start doing great things with our lives.

Before all of that happens, I just want to say one thing: I need to stop going to parties that end with people throwing up. It's really getting old.

Made it to DC after a 10-hour car trip. Exciting bits included hitting traffic in CT, NY and on the Jersey Turnpike, and passing a car on fire just outside Baltimore. Otherwise, it was uneventful -- catching up on sleep was nice.

My proudest academic moment of the year came yesterday morning, when I referenced The Muppet Christmas Carol in a discussion of George Eliot's The Mill on the Floss (1860). All I'm saying is, the unidentified omniscient narrator of the novel is a lot like Gonzo (aka Charles Dickens): he guides us through the story, and is present in the scene, but doesn't actually take part in the story. And that's okay, Crazy Girl In My Class -- the narrator doesn't have to be a part of the action, just get. over. it.

'Net access will be sporadic over the weekend, once Mom gets here and the cousins are out of school and competing for computer time...therefore Happy Thanksgiving, all! Travel safe, eat all you can, and have a wonderful time with your families.

    Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] sadai!

You're the best academic cheerleader* and Suzuki partner that a girl could ask for. Hope you have a fabulous day full of good times and all that jazz!

Is there any birthday present better than a Friday without Suzuki? :)

    Happy Birthday, [livejournal.com profile] newredshoes!

You're finally legal, baby -- congrats! Now go take advantage of all the fine establishments your town is famous for. :)

PS. Tonight I met a guy called Logan who lived in your UChicago house last year. Small world, yo.

I'm really just not in Tom Stoppard mode today (which is a problem, 'tis true), so I'm doing a fabulous 21st b-day update instead. Because, hey, milestone and all that. (Plus I have energy now -- yay coffee and naps -- but clearly don't want to waste it on writing a paper.)

Birthday, Round 1: The day started off well, last Friday, but the evening turned into a bit of a bust. Kloss, Kristy and I enjoyed a most excellent birthday dinner at an Italian place in town (topping off my week of pasta meals with one that I didn't have to cook myself :) ). There was wine and it was happy.

    And it continues...into Round 2 )

And that's why I accomplished nothing today. On the up-side, I get to see my mommy tomorrow, AND we're having sushi. Hooray!

kmmatero is adorable. She was plugging away on her set model last night, and I was quietly reading/periodically cheering her on. Precisely at midnight, she looks over: "Happy Birthday!" Thankee. :)

St. Patrick's Day was pretty low key. I spent the evening baking cookies, watching Scrubs, and cutting out wee people for Kristy's set. Her room is close enough to the dorm bar, however, that we could easily hear the revelry and pretend to be a part of it. Tonight will definitely make up for it: fancy dinner, plus huge end-of-term party -- briliant.

    Cheers, all.

    Happy (early) St. Patrick's Day!

I've been in Canterbury since Tuesday afternoon, and the weather's just lovely. (I'm expecting it to rain cats and dogs today or tomorrow, in order to make up for the beautiful SPRING days we've had.) People were very confused when I returned from visiting Kloss and Kristy in the fall, without having been to Canterbury Cathedral. At the time, I blamed the short length of my stay. The truth is, the cathedral just doesn't compare to the thrill of sitting around Kloss's kitchen, shooting the shit. Seriously. (Having seen the cathedral now, I can say that for certain. It's not that the cathedral is boring, or even somehow less cool than sitting around and trading gossip; it's just that it's not any more exciting.)

Most of my time has been spent sitting around talking about random things, catching up on MHC gossip and legitimate issues like the ongoing budget failure, and squeeing about how awesome it would be if some of us ended up in the campus apartments for next year. (We find out on Friday -- yay!) My other major accomplishments were reading Stoppard's The Real Thing (homework on break, yes, I know) and starting a Facebook group for campus techies ("I Sold My Soul to the Theatre, and All I Got Was This Lousy Black T-Shirt"). Big things, folk. Big things.

I had a great time in Bath; huge thanks again to Dorothee and Bridget for hosting me, and keeping me entertained as much as possible (while allowing me ample time to entertain myself, which I appreciate). I finally made it to the Roman Baths (totally worth it) and experienced a Sally Lunn Bun (which was slightly less worth it but ultimately saved by the lemon curd topping). My fabulous British vacation has been fabulously low-key, but I like that. Vacations are supposed to be relaxing.

I'm getting a lot of reading done, taking a lot of naps, and finally catching up on all my delayed correspondence from earlier in the semester. My pen pals in Chile and Scotland have a little something-something to look forward to in their mailboxes, as will many of mes amis aux Etats-Unis (once their postcards are purchased and written -- still behind on the Americans, sorry). There's a very good chance that I could finish all of my break-time homework, which would be amazing, since I'll have two papers and a proposal to produce within a week of my return.

Furthermore, Kloss, Kristy and I have decided that we need to facilitate the return of karaoke to the MHC social world, and that our housewarming party/Kristy's 21st birthday bash will be the perfect venue to do so. Consider yourselves warned, and start practicing now. *g*

Having issues getting interested in homework, even though I know that I have a paper due Friday, and I'm totally not prepared to start writing it. I still have to do reading on-line, and I'm having major issues re-downloading Acrobat. Grrr.

Valentine's Day -- not too bad. In addition to Mom's cookie platter, I have two packages waiting for me in mail services -- presumably the annual Aunt Michelle Box o' Valentine's Goodies. It's nice to remember how awesome my family really is, for all they're kind of crazy and weird most of the year.

It's easy for me to get bogged down in the couple-ness of the holiday, but after lunch, my mood improved. My favorite part of Valentine's (chocolate aside) is just hearing from and getting in touch with friends that I haven't talked to in awhile. My friends are my support system, no question, even more than my family. I'm happy to take a day that can kind of suck for us Singletons, and make it somewhat better by just reminding everyone how much I love them.

*cough* Surprisingly, no alcohol was consumed during production of this post. :)

Let the record show that I successfully completed my Christmas shopping today, Dec. 22nd, a full two days early (*frantically rechecks mental list, likely forgetting someone*). I even wrapped about half of my gifts. Go me! This is a personal best in recent years, when I've been among the desperate souls trekking to Toys R Us on Christmas Eve to fight over Legos.

I'd like to thank [livejournal.com profile] llogan, who invited me to join in on his last-minute shopping Tuesday afternoon; and Dad, who fielded multiple phone calls while I tried to figure out what to get for an 11-year-old brother I haven't seen in a year; and Dad's girlfriend, who I woke from her nap this afternoon to verify her coffee bean preference. Also, thanks to Stauf's coffee roasters and Heidi's Homemade (pet treats) for being within walking distance of my house, which allowed me to finish my shopping despite the approximately 2" of snow accumulated on the streets post-plowing (and 6" on the sidewalks, sans shoveling).

Further adding to my good mood: the GHPL interlibrary loan system, which granted me a copy of The Muppet Christmas Carol, which I watched this evening to truly get into the holiday spirit. A holiday staple in Dad's house (the other one being Mr. Magoo's Christmas Carol -- razzleberry dressing, anyone?), I hadn't watched the Muppet musical spectacular since middle school. I can still sing along with all the songs, the boring 'romantic' song is still boring, and the comedic stylings of Gonzo (as Charles Dickens) and his sidekick Rizzo the Rat still make me chuckle. Michael Caine is my most favorite Scrooge, and really holds his own with Kermit the Frog (Bob Cratchit).  Awww. Warm fuzzies!

    Best Variety news item ever:
    RHYS-MEYERS TO BE KING
Eye's mini sets sights on Elvis
"Bend It Like Beckham" star Jonathan Rhys-Meyers will soon belt it like Elvis. Brit thesp has signed on to star as the king of rock 'n' roll in CBS' upcoming mini[series] "Elvis."
    Heeeeeeee. *stupid grin*

The official ASE Thanksgiving extravaganza was tonight, lovingly catered by local company Strawberry Field. The turkey was disappointing, the stuffing was bland, the potatoes weren't mashed == but it was all good, because BR brought wine. BR is my hero. I had far too much wine, and went home early-ish to help Roommate with her Shakespeare paper (creating a 'prompt copy' of a script for a scene in a Shakespeare play -- complete w/ stage directions and tech cues -- whee!). now we're at Nelson House so she can finish, and I can ostensibly finish my reading before going to the Huntsman for belated natal celebrations for Jeff and Edwin A. Yay!

Although plus de l'alcool ce soir is probably not a good plan. 9:30 class, plus unread copy of The Tempest for said class = a rather bad thing. Oh well.

PS. Am going to Norway for the weekend. Happy Thanksgiving to me. :)

PPS. Am rejected from Junior Show writers' board. Dammit. you'd think that after Dembowski went to the trouble of interviewing me over AIM (albeit after some re-negotiations of the time), they'd be more inclined to include me. Am I hurt? Maybe a little. *pout* I can be funny, dammit. And I don't have time to stage manage; otherwise, I totally would. I'll have to find something else to do over J-term -- but I think I missed registration for classes. Whoops.

I'm in an internet cafe across the street from Victoria Station, waiting for kmmatero and kakloss to arrive. The weather's crap (although it's not raining at the moment), I'm definitely getting sick again (toted the classy roll of loo paper around the house yesterday, as am too cheap to buy kleenex), and I'm still utterly sleep-deprived...but I'm so, so happy to be on vacation!

And in London, which just makes it even cooler. My housemates may be on more exotic trips (Italy, Greek islands, Amsterdam, Egypt) but dammit, I get to see people from school.

No solid plans yet; theatre, shopping, art/history museums...whatever we can come up with. We'll see.

Papers? They're finished, at least. Not going to worry about it now. However, will definitely be starting work on papers number two as soon as I get back. :) (See? I'm trying to change my procrastinatory ways! I get points for trying, right?)

Updates will continue through the weekend, of course. My poor neglected journal.
