Hi! This is Emily's stream-of-consciousness, slightly-drunk-still, last post from Oxford.
I may regret this tomorrow. But I'm finding I can type surprisingly well--despite the number of tries it took me to write 'f aigoltz|more' and try to harass poor banannagoats some more. Finding telnet on the JCR computers made my day yesterday--too bad it had to wait until 48 hours before we left.
Tutors' dinner tonight was great. Fabulous. My knee just popped ridiculously loudly. Anyway...I sat with the printmaking tutor and her husband. Husband and I talked about theatre productions--Shakespeare and Chekov, and PS, he'd heard of Jacques Brel, tho' not the musical--almost the entire time, with a slight digression into politics (naturally) and brief discussion of 'Girl With A Pearl Earring' ('pretty film--yes, quite. got a bit wrong, though').
Dinner was followed by post-dinner entertainment, consisting of ASE alum singing (rather badly, and sadly), and current ASE tutor telling long, pointless story before playing pretty guitar pop-song medley. [Digression: wanted to read 'Amazing Race' recaps, and catch up--because I am that sad--but reading is officially too much work--not quite sobered up yet. Just wanted to share.]
Songs in alum's performance totaled 6; we were promised 'light, happy after-dinner entertainment'--didn't so much deliver on that one. 'Come Away With Me' (waaaaay out of her range, plus bad choice for a 'warm-up'); some ballad-y thing about Miss Otis, who shoots her lover and is hanged and thus can't make it to lunch today, madame (honest--this is the most accurate description I could give you, even totally sober); 'Send in the Clowns' (um...no comment); 'I cried a river over you' (oh, how I missed my Berman there--a good jazz singer can do great things with that one); something..."I've seen love from both sides now" ring a bell for anybody? Yeah, that one; and closed with 'Somewhere Over the Rainbow' (an obnoxious arrangement, but points for being in-range).
Afterward, everybody (and I do mean everybody) went down to the Univ bar. Yay, Cellar Bar! I had one gin & tonic (a double--I ran out of cash fast today) and some cocktail called a Squashed Frog--(it was green, I don't know, and somebody bought it for me)--and going out seemed like a good idea. Then we walked back and forth up and down the High for about 20 minutes...and I decided it was more sensible to come back, pack, and go to bed. So I hit up the JCR just to be sure...that the computer wouldn't be neglected? I don't know where that was going, and I'll probably regret this later, but it'll be funny. For somebody, at least.
Um. GIP! Yaaayyy kilts! Edited to add: a happy belated Mountain Day to the MoHos, and happy one-month-in-England anniversary to me. Whee!
