obligatory weekly film review
Feb. 21st, 2004 12:46 pmFinally saw Girl With A Pearl Earring last night. It was beautifully, beautifully shot--but I think it's the kind of story that doesn't entirely work cinematically. Griet says so little, and Scarlett Johansson does an excellent job w/ the non-verbal acting, but it felt like there was a missing layer.
I think the absence of an internal monologue was so noticeable just because the other aspects of the film--the score, the cinematography, even the performances--were so rich.
And that last sentence makes it sound like SJ's performance should have been enough. I mean, I completely followed her train of thought most of the time...Okay. Maybe I take it back. I could pretty much tell what she was feeling/thinking. Butbutbut...I wanted more.
Perhaps I ought to just go read the book.
