I was just moved almost to tears by a John Wayne movie.
Fortunately, the super-cheesy "Ballad of the Green Berets" kicked in, and I was saved from total embarassment. Still, it was interesting to see how much the movie got to me -- one of the few unambiguous "Rah, Rah Vietnam!" films out there, and one of the only ones set in the field during the war; I was expecting it to be really heavy-handed and hilarious, but it was actually pretty well-made. Excepting the giant, ham-handed press conference at the beginning.
Beckworth the Skeptical Journalist's conversion to The Cause was inevitable, but it was handled well, and it took him awhile to change his mind -- not subtle, but character development nonetheless. Bonus: George Takei, kickin' ass as a South Vietnamese captain working with the Americans.
M*A*S*H was highly enjoyable, too. I feel like I need to watch it again, but I just don't have time, and I'm really afraid that this history paper is going to suck ass. As will my film paper, but that's not new. Aaaagggghhh.
Worse than crying at a JW movie? My small infatuation with young Donald Sutherland. ...I know. I'll just go back to my corner.
ETA: And because I have nothing better to do...JRM promo shot for CBS' Elvis. Hot. I have this feeling it's going to be sooo trashy -- call it the "Rose McGowan Factor" or the "Irishman Plays a Southerner Factor" -- but I also reeeeeally want to witness it. May 8th and 11th, 8 pm.

Date: 2005-04-27 08:59 am (UTC)JRM--such a weird guy. Very addicting to watch though. I think he would scare me if I ever met him. Still love watching his movies though. But I agree--an Irishman playing a Southerner?! But then again Ewan did something along the same lines in "Lipstick on your Collar" (which I have not watched--that's right, something McGregor that I have not seen).
P.S. I haven't forgotten about your e-mail! But Bridget said she talked to you the other day so...erm, I'm using it as a sort of excuse.

Date: 2005-04-27 02:34 pm (UTC)PS. You can use that as an excuse if you want, but the mind of Bridget is not the same as the mind of Dorothee (contrary to popular opinion), and I still want to hear what's actually going on. : P
