Jeezum pete: Garden State is a really, really good movie.

(Just watched 3/4 of it in the lounge w/ other Reunioners -- who really needs to be packing?)

I've seen it enough times now to appreciate both its flaws and its strengths. Sam, as a character, is still written way too young for most of it, and too obviously quirky for me to like her from the start, but oh. The cuteness. The unbearable cuteness. :)

And the Zach Braff-ness. <3 the Zach Braff-ness. The pretty slo-mo shots (wee children crossing the street!), the beautiful use of the soundtrack ("Only Living Boy in New York" = guaranteed sniffles), and just...it's the classic alienation story, y'know? It's like a Graduate for our generation -- and I think the comparison is apt, especially judging by the ubiquitousness of the soundtrack on the MHC iTunes network.

I can be way more cynical about it when watching it with a group...sadly, the time I found it most affecting was on the plane coming back from England at spring break. Watching with others makes me notice the flaws more, for some reason. But anyway. It was a good evening, and I look forward to watching Rushmore with banannagoats some other time over reunion. Because hello -- speaking of movies with good soundtracks that everyone needs to see? Rushmore is it. Yay!

PS. Did I mention that 'Goats mixed apple martinis before the movie? And that we snuck them into the TV room in pop bottles? *big grin*
