Sometimes I pick up books from my childhood and start reading them again. Then I remember that I have a scanner, and I spend a good two four hours violating all sorts of copyright laws. I think I crossed the line of fair use with Barbara Cooney's picture book Miss Rumphius -- but I couldn't help it. Every page has some wonderful bit, even if it's just a tiny detail. Related: you may notice that I'm kind of in love with the little house by the sea. I apologize for my enthusiasm on that one, but there frankly wasn't much else to do last night.

Some coloring variations -- I've noticed that what looks good on my monitor frequently looks too dark on others, so here are a few lighter versions:

Additionally, this one's for the Pioneer Valley kids -- Miss Rumphius totally works at Smith's Neilson Library:

I haven't iconned it yet, 'cause I didn't want to lose the effect of seeing the entire building. It does make me happy, though. *g*

Barbara Cooney is so wonderful! My goal in life is to own an edition of Little Women that she illustrated -- it was the version that I checked out from the public library as a kid, and her little chapter-header illustrations were just great. Of course, it's out of print. :(

I did have an excellent Thanksgiving, thanks. I hope that you had a lovely time at home, too!

The illustrations definitely stuck with me the longest, but the text is quite nice, too:
Miss Rumphius was almost perfectly happy. "But there is still one more thing I have to do," she said. "I have to do something to make the world more beautiful." But what? "The world already is pretty nice," she thought, looking out over the ocean.

Ohmygosh, that book! And may I cheerfully steal nos. 3 and 5? They're all just too splendid.

Oh how I love thee, Barbara Cooney!!! Did you know that Miss Rumphius is Penny Gill's favorite book? (Penny Gill being, of course, my favorite professor/person of all time.) Other excellent Barbara Cooneys: Roxaboxen, Emily (about Emily Dickenson!) and The Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree (my favorite Christmas book, which never ceases to make me cry).

I might be stealing all of your icons...

Do it! I might make more, too -- there are many nice little cat illustrations, and more flowers that might need a home online. I had no idea these were going to be so popular!

I haven't heard of these other Cooneys! I'm most familiar with Ox-Cart Man (which she only illustrated, didn't write), and Holly and Ivy, another Christmas book that makes me cry.

Oh I love those two as well! Ahhhh she's so great!!! Year of the Perfect Christmas Tree is immensely more cry-worthy than Holly and Ivy.

oh my goodness, the lupin lady! This was one of my favorite childhood books, too. And I can't believe that's the Smith Library, but it must be. Haha, splendid!
