So. Because we're too poor, and ostensibly too busy to really leave campus this weekend, banannagoats and I stayed in and had a movie night. I had to watch State Fair for the Musical Film, and grabbed Strictly Ballroom while I was over at the library, just 'cause.

I'll be blunt: State Fair is not a very good movie. I needed to watch a "folk musical," something reflective of jolly Americana and all that rot, so I picked this one. Maybe should have gone for Carousel instead? Or Oklahoma! for the millionth time? There's just no compelling conflict, good music, or interesting choreography. In short, not much of any reason to watch. Rogers and Hammerstein let me down, yo.

Fortunately, we kept ourselves entertained by adding our own mildly inappropriate dialogue. Better yet, we inserted jokes from the fair (including hog-in-love sound effects--lovely, Anna) to the next movie.

Strictly Ballroom, on the other hand, is a quality film. I watched it ages ago last summer, but had forgotten a great deal (probably because I fell asleep watching it the first time). Ye gods: I have never wanted to dance around in sequins and high heels so much in my entire life.

Okay. I could probably take a pass on the sequins. And definitely the heels. But it's just the sweetest story (a familiar story, to be sure: Dirty Dancing plus every backstage musical ever times a little bit of Spanish flair), with some great performances to boot. Plus, you can totally see where Baz Luhrmann ripped off his own shots for scenes in Moulin Rouge. The man may be a pretentious git who doesn't give a shit about continuity, but he sure can tell a good story. :) Yay Baz! Make more movies! You all: go rent Strictly Ballroom. Yes, now. Go.

And that was my Saturday night. Good times. :)

In other news, my computer's down again. Possibly a network card failure; possibly a virus. I get to figure it out this afternoon, before the Oscars. (Academy Awards! Pretty gowns! Hobbitses in tuxes! Wheeeee!)
