King Kong: Caught the trailer whilst channel surfing this evening -- absolutely perfect timing, just as the Universal logo came up. I had forgotten almost everything I ever knew about this movie; I remembered there would be ActionStar!Adrien Brody, and super-director PJ, of course, but SeriousActor!Jack Black, MovieStar!Naomi Watts, and secret underage boyfriend #2 Jamie Bell were a pleasant surprise. Will it be good? Eh -- too soon to tell, really. Will it look totally awesome? Hell yes. :)
Batman: Still haven't seen it. We'll see if I can hold out until the family returns and Cousin Mick and Uncle Jeff will want to go see it...but I'm not sure I can resist the power of the Bale for that long. I'm surprised I've made it this far.
Harry Potter: In the spirit of getting ready for the next one, I decided it was time to go back and reread Order of the Phoenix. I keep falling asleep. However, it's interesting and worthwhile, because I keep coming across things (Arabella Figg, the Black family tree, the layout of the Ministry, Tonks) that are good to remember, and other things (like Sirius's entire characterization, and Bill Weasley) that have been totally skewed by fanfic. I feel like it's a bad thing when you can't keep fanon/canon straight any more -- I may have to go off fic until this thing comes out to avoid confusion.
Additionally, every time I come across Luna Lovegood, or Draco, or Cornelius Fudge...I get Harry and the Potters lyrics stuck in my head. I went to bed singing "Loony Luna Lovegood/you're okay in my book," and woke up with "Cornelius Fudge is an ass" running on endless repeat. It's only a matter of time until I get to the Draco Malfoy song, and that one always takes days to get rid of. I feel that Cousin Mick, who will be 11 in July, needs a "Voldemort Can't Stop the Rock" t-shirt...but alas, it looks like they're only sold at concerts. He may get a CD instead, but I fear his parents would have to kill me -- I don't really want to inflict "Wizard Chess" on an entire household.
Hi. I know waaaaaay too much about a mediocre wizards' band. Help me.
Star Wars: I'm still utterly entranced by the original trilogy, as evidenced by my inability to turn away from the A&E "making of" special tonight. All the behind-the-scenes stuff is just SO COOL! Even though I'd heard most of the stories before (Han Solo was supposed to die, but George shot it down; the Jedi title change), the footage from the sets was awesome. The backstage aspects are all so fascinating, and I really do think that my interest in filmmaking can be traced back to these movies. Plus, the AFI Silver is showing the trilogy on the big screen during the first two weeks of July...and I really want to see them again. Just because. Dammit. I've been back in, haven't I?
NEW FANDOM ALERT: I read Good Omens last week, and I think I want more.
newredshoes,
olivia_circe, as the resident Gaiman fangirls on my flist, I'm counting on you two for recs. I'll read whatever you tell me to pick up next -- especially if I can find it at the local used bookstore (translation: options, s'il vous plait). Cheers.
If you'll excuse me, I need to go read. More.

Date: 2005-06-28 12:07 pm (UTC)I recommend that you read Neverwhere, which is just damn good fantasy (as is Stardust, but Neverwhere was eventually made into a BBC mini-series.). American Gods is also great summer reading.
Oh yeah, and stop resisting the Bale! AND the Murphy!!

Date: 2005-06-28 04:19 pm (UTC)If you can find Stardust in Graphic Novel form, Charles Vess did the art and it's just beautiful. Otherwise, you can just read it in novel form and I'll loan you the Graphic Novel when we get back to school.

Date: 2005-06-28 02:13 pm (UTC)Oh man, you've just--everything that Neil's written ever! *calms down, but still gleeing v. v. much* His short stories are really cool -- you can find them in paperback collections (Smoke & Mirrors is one), although recently there seem to be a whole lot that are being illustrated by amazing people like Charles Vess. He also seems to be the Stamp o'Quality for an anthology of any sort: I just picked up the Best of the Locus Awards (or somesuch title, methinks) because it included a story of his I'd never seen before. As far as comics go, 1602 is quite neat and awesome, but if my memory is not faulty and you haven't read The Sandman, then hie yourself hence and pick up Fables & Reflections this very instant! That's the one I started off with; it's a collection of short stories about the Endless, and it also happens to explain a major motivation for Desire and a huge insight into Dream for the series as a whole.
I also second the Stardust/Neverwhere/American Gods recs; his childrens books are fantastic too. Try Coraline for a really quick (an afternoon) read, and the picture books he did with Dave McKean, with whom he's doing Mirrormask, which should be the most badass animated film of all time, are great too (The Wolves in the Walls, The Day I Swapped My Dad for Two Goldfish).
For fic, I'm not so certain. I know there's

Date: 2005-06-28 04:35 pm (UTC)Yes, exactly. Definitely start with Sandman, though. Definitely! You should be able to find them pretty easily, but if you don't feel like shelling out the money you need to buy them all (because you will want to buy them all), I can loan them to you in the fall. American Gods is probably my favorite of his novels, but again, everything!
In terms of fic...I'm a Crowley/Aziraphale girl. Also, I really enjoy crazzy crossovers with Good Omens. If the damn link to Les Omens (Les Mis/Good Omens) wasn't down I'd rec it to you, but as it is...I have no crossover recs at the moment. There's an HP/Good Omens crossover in my to-reads, but I haven't gotten to it yet.
Afrai at http://thewritegirls.populli.net/afrai/go.html has some good GO fic, not all of which I've read; Mel (there's a link at the bottom of the page) at the same site has a lot of recs. And my favorite story ever (or at least, Crowley/Aziraphale store ever) is Twofish (http://www.fanfiction.net/s/677017/1/).
Oh, Batman. *happy sigh*
I know what you mean about the HP fic problem. I haven't reread the books in quite a while, and I've already sort of forgotten about what's canon and what isn't. Not gonna stop me reading fic though. *grin*

Date: 2005-06-28 04:54 pm (UTC)IIRC, it was actually a Good Omens crossover that made me finally pick up the novel -- the link is somewhere on my home computer, but I'll dig it up tonight.

Date: 2005-06-28 04:43 pm (UTC)I hadn't even started to think about fic yet, but I appreciate those recs as well. And I'm glad you're so excited about it -- even if I find the Theoden icon rather scary. :)
